Windows Server

Clearly the majority of the world's networks run using Microsoft Windows, both on the server and the workstation. The Windows NT platform first appeared in July 1993 as Windows NT 3.1 Advanced Server and Windows NT 3.1 Workstation.

As a company, we were already committed to the NT platform having participated in the early beta programs which started in early 1993. At that time, the cost of the memory (32Mb) to run the product cost almost as much as the workstation itself. However, it was clear from the outset that this was going to not only be a significant operating system platform for Microsoft, but most likely THE operating system going forward. With the Windows 95 product line having its heritage in the Windows 3.x and MSDOS platforms, the longevity of this as a solution was questionable.

One client in particular completely bypassed the whole Windows 95/98/ME technology and went straight from Windows 3.11 Workgroups to an NT 4 deployment on the workstation. With the company already having adopted NT for their server platform (at NT 3.5), not only were we gaining valuable experience of using this product internally, but we had customers seeing the benefit in their own commercial environments. That first NT 3.5 server was finally powered down in 2009!

Windows NT 3.1 would go on to become NT 3.51, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows Server 2008 with Windows 7 in the pipeline.

By 2009, Exmos now has over 16 years of experience with this operating system and is ideally suited to design, build and support your business network.
